Trips

Basecamp trips and fees include all transportation (Memorial Union to Memorial Union), food, specialized equipment and experienced UW-Madison student trip leaders. You provide personal gear (list provided after registration and/or available for download upon request).  All trips are co-led by trained and experienced UW-Madison students.

Below is the list of 2012 Wisconsin Basecamp trips.  The exact trip dates for 2012 are posted below and online registration is possible by clicking on the trip dates of your choice.  For 2012 Basecamp Trips are scheduled so that you can do Basecamp in conjuction with attendance at SOAR.  The folks at the Center for the First-Year Experience can help you schedule your SOAR session prior to any of these Basecamp Trips AND arrange for housing on campus between SOAR and Basecamp...

Canoe Camping on the Wisconsin River

This is the signature WI Basecamp Trip—the trip that started it all and still our most popular.  Spend four days canoeing the scenic Wisconsin River between Spring Green and Boscobel—designated as a Wisconsin Scenic Riverway, this is the longest stretch of undammed river in the upper Midwest.  On the final day of the trip you will camp, hike and enjoy scenic Devil’s Lake State Park.

Camp of sandbars, experience this incredible scenic riverway, see a variety of wildlife, learn outdoor wilderness skills and participate in a unique, facilitated curriculum to help you succeed at UW-Madison while creating a new group of friends that are just like you - just starting out that the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 2012.

Sea Kayaking the Apostle Islands

This new Basecamp Trip was first offered in 2011 and will take you to the beautiful Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Wisconsin's Lake Superior shoreline. This is a professionally guided trip that includes the same Basecamp curriculum but explores one of the most scenic inland lake and island areas in the world.  Experience Lake Superior in the unique way that a sea kayak offers.  Explore "sea caves," experience remote island camping (weather permitting),  learn paddling and wilderness skills while participating in a unique, facilitated curriculum to help you succeed at UW-Madison while creating a new group of friends that are just like you - just starting out that the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 2012.   (To see video from the 2011 trip Click Here.)
PLEASE NOTE: While no previous kayaking/paddling experience is needed (we will teach you!), participants need to be comfortable on the water and have good to excellent swimming skills.

Trip # 9 - Saturday, 7/21 - Friday, 7/27 (7 Days)        Trip Fee = $795

Backpacking the Porcupine Mountains

Backpacking has been a traditional Basecamp Trip that this year moves to the 60,000 acre wilderness of the Porcupine Mountains on the shore of Lake Superior in the UP.  Accept the challenge of (as a group) carrying all you need to survive for five days on your back as you explore the Lake Superior shoreline, virgin forests and climb to the Lake of the Clouds. Learn backpacking and wilderness skills and participate in a unique, facilitated curriculum to help you succeed at UW-Madison while creating a new group of friends that are just like you - just starting out that the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 2012.  Year after year the backpacking trips create the strongest groups of friends coming out of Basecamp and starting school together!

The Ice Age Trail/Devils Lake

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail will eventually cross the entire state of Wisconsin, tracing the extent of most recent ice age/glaciation in Wisconsin.  You can help build this trail while also experiencing the incredible scenery and recreation opportunities of Devils Lake State Park.  Imagine hiking majestic bluffs, sunset swims in a pristine lake, and safely learning technical climbing skills in the best rock climbing site in the upper Midwest.  And like all other Basecamp Trips you will participate in a unique, facilitated curriculum to help you succeed at UW-Madison while creating a new group of friends that are just like you - just starting out that the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 2012.   (Watch a video about the Ice Trail - Click Here.)

    If you wish to apply for a scholarship, include the Scholarship Application Form.
