Keynote Speakers
David Bertorelli is the Director of Space Planning and Design for Enterprise Rent-A-Car and is responsible for strategic planning, design, and construction for its headquarters buildings in St. Louis, Missouri. Enterprise is the largest rental car company in North America, operating more than 850,000 vehicles worldwide with annual revenues of more than $9 billion. David is leading the company’s effort in implementing environmentally responsible design and construction for its built environment. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. In 2003 he founded ReSource St. Louis, and is currently the president of this non-profit organization. Its goals are to promote the judicious use of construction "waste" and debris and to network with like-minded organizations to promote the reuse and recycling of construction materials. David will share his experience in instituting building materials reuse and other waste reduction strategies into a large corporation and the community at large .
John Abrams is Co-Founder and President of South Mountain Company, located on Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Started over 30 years ago, South Mountain Company is an employee-owned design and building company committed to responsible business practice. Currently 30 employees strong (over half of whom share ownership in the business), John and his company have designed and built more than 100 major renovation and new housing projects, currently earning $7million in annual revenues. In addition to his design and business skills, John is also a writer. He is author of The Company We Keep: Reinventing Small Business for People, Community and Place (Chelsea Green Publishing) and many articles about green building and workplace democracy, which have appeared in national publications such as Business Ethics and Fine Homebuilding. In addition to the social responsibility infused in the South Mountain Company, they are very environmentally minded and have much experience in the salvage and reuse of building materials for their building projects. John will speak to us about materials reuse, house moving, and his experience running a company that walks the tightrope between social consciousness, environmental responsibility, and financial success.
Alex Wilson is the Executive Editor of Environmental Building News. For more than 25 years Alex has written about energy-efficient and environmentally responsible design and construction. Prior to starting his own company in 1985 (now BuildingGreen, Inc.), he was executive director of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association for five years; before that he taught workshops on the construction of solar greenhouses in New Mexico in the late '70s. Alex is author of Your Green Home (New Society Publishers, 2006) and coauthor of the Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings (ACEEE, 8th edition, 2003); and Green Development: Integrating Ecology and Real Estate (John Wiley & Sons, 1998). He has also written hundreds of articles for other publications, including Fine Homebuilding, Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture, the Journal of Light Construction, and Popular Science. Alex served on the board of directors of the U.S. Green Building Council for five years and he is currently a trustee of The Nature Conservancy - Vermont Chapter. Alex will share his view of how building deconstruction, building materials reuse, and C&D Recycling are integral parts of green building.
