Conference Tour
Wednesday, May 16, 2007 • 12:15 pm – 7:00pm
Join us for the optional Decon 07’ Tour to be held Wednesday afternoon, immediately after the conference closes. We have an exciting lineup of sites to visit, plus a chance to see a bit of beautiful rural Wisconsin. We are chartering a deluxe motor coach, but it’s limited to 55 passengers, so sign up early! Lunch included in tour price. Cost: $50 per person. Tour leaves promptly at 12:15 from the front of the Memorial Union.
Site Visits Currently Planned:
Timber-Framed Home: We’ll drive west of Madison into the Baraboo Hills to visit timber framer Tom Holmes, of Glenville Timber Wrights. After 25 years of building timber frames for others, Tom has recently completed his own dream home which is constructed using many reclaimed materials. Tom will tell us how he built this beautiful, high efficiency green home. Time permitting; we will visit Tom’s timber shop and his reclaimed timber remilling operation.
Jobsite Waste Recycling Project: We’ll visit the construction site of the new American Family Children's Hospital and Interdisciplinary Research Complex (IRC) to witness construction site waste management in progress. The $78 million, 252,000 square foot Children’s Hospital is designed to be a world-class pediatric health care facility solely dedicated to the care and treatment of children. Halfway through the project, more than 1.5 million pounds of material has been recycled, providing the project with an impressive 75% recycling rate. The hospital’s neighbor, the Interdisciplinary Research Complex (IRC), will focus on cancer, stem cell and regenerative medicine research. It’s close proximity to the UW Hospital and Clinics will allow medical discoveries to quickly enter the clinical care facilities. The $134 million complex is set to open in 2008 and has been successful in recycling more than 11 million pounds of materials and saving more than $150,000 in avoided disposal costs. WasteCap Wisconsin, our co-sponsor of the Decon 07’ conference, is providing technical and educational assistance, jobsite monitoring and documenting of construction waste management efforts for both projects.
Madison’s Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Optional stop): The Habitat ReStore is one of the few building materials reuse centers in Wisconsin. In addition to storefront sales of donated materials, the Madison ReStore has an active deconstruction program. Director Jen Vochick and deconstruction coordinator Frank Byrne will host our visit and show us how the operation works.
Our final stop will be a reception at the offices of the Madison Environmental Group (MEG), a Madison based consulting firm assisting businesses with innovative resource and cost saving solutions which contribute to a healthy community and environment. MEG’s offices are furnished with an interesting array of reused materials. Enjoy some local Wisconsin brew, nibble some snacks, and mingle with MEG staff as you check out some innovative uses of reused building materials. Bus service back to the conference center will be provided.
