  • Trompe l'oeil Paintings by Lee Budahl

Date: 7/4/2015 at 7:00 am to 10:00 pm
    Cost: FREE!
    Sponsor: WUD Art Committee
Location: Union South - Gallery 1308.

The paintings in this exhibit appear so naturalistic that they tempt the viewer to touch them. As such, the paintings are part of a tradition of trompe l'oeil (fool-the-eye) realism which began in ancient Rome and is still visible in places like computer screens as "shadows" at the edges of rectangular shapes. Although Dr. Budahl's paintings may deceive a viewer, the deception lasts only a fraction of a second, since the viewer knows rationally that the picture frame contains only a flat surface covered with paint. According to the artist, this brief unsureness about reality opens the possibility for a unique experience.

  • "Reflections" by Roberta Condon

Date: 7/4/2015 at 10:00 am to 8:00 pm
    Cost: FREE!
    Sponsor: WUD Art Committee
Location: Memorial Union - Lakefront on Langdon Gallery.

The artist states, "I am a Mother, Dog Walker, Painter, Gallery Owner, Long Distance Swimmer. While reflecting on the things I see around me I note the feeling, the smell, the reflections in the water. Returning to the studio, I paint with these impressions in mind. The show contains 14 pieces painted with the varied Wisconsin environment in my senses and psyche. My heart is so full when I view my surroundings, it aches."

    I swim the shoreline
    Floating on the surface plane
    Each lake has a sound.

    Cost: FREE!
    Sponsor: WUD Art Committee
Location: Memorial Union - Porter Butts Gallery.

  • "She Defines Herself" by Heather Brammeier

    Cost: FREE!
    Sponsor: WUD Art Committee
Location: Memorial Union - Class of 1925 Gallery.

The artist states, "This exhibition examines the relevance of masterwork paintings. By focusing on the female figure and her relationship to the space, I am exploring identity and empowerment. The women in the portraits are all shown in a moment of introspection, and invented landscapes create metaphor for internal struggles."
