2013 WAMI Winner for Male Vocalist of the Year!!!
Joseph "Smokey" Holman rose onto the national scene coming out of Gary, Indiana in the late 60's with the Domestic 4. Initially the band made 2 trips to Memphis and worked with Rufus Thomas and Willie Mitchell recording songs for Hi Records. The business agreement fell apart and the songs were never released. With Stevie Wonder's first cousin (Charles Simmons) in the band - they also got a chance to audition for Motown. Motown liked what they heard and the band was sent immediately to Studio B to record 2 demos. Again the business fell apart and the music was never released.
In 2012 Smokey was nominated for a WAMI (Wisconsin Area Musical Industry) for Best Male Vocalist. Smokey has also helped co-write songs on Tweed Funk's debut CD,Bringin It and latest CD, Love Is.
Thursday, Jun. 6 - WUD Music Presents: The Orwells w/ Twin Peaks and Young Holidays

The ORWELLS are made up of five seventeen year olds from Chicago, Illinois. They play rock n roll music. Their names are Mario, Grant, Henry, Dominick and Matt. They write songs -- scratch that, primitive teenage battle cries -- about girls and America and being suspended from high school. Although one might categorize The Orwells' distinct brand of the blues as garage or punk, they would be wrong. The Orwells sound comes from a deeper, different place. A place both long forgotten and also timeless. Their first LP, "Remember When" comes out this summer on Autumn Tone Records. Be the first on your block to snatch it up.

After playing in various bands throughout their teenage years, Twin Peaks - Cadien, Clay, Connor, and Jack - self-released their self-recorded album, and completed a 3 week self-booked tour in theSummer of '12. Since then, the industrious lads attended college for a semester, promptly dropped out, played SXSW, and are slated to re-release their Sunken debut via Aquarium Drunkard's Autumn Tone Records this June. Sunken rolls catchy hooks, chorused guitars, chugging rhythms, and blasts of pure rock & roll snarl into one super-tight album. While there is no shortage of sophistication in their arrangements, Twin Peaks' songs eschew the bullshit and stay true to their youthful reality -- pretty girls, smoking & drinking in the park, wilding around the streets of Chicago. Unapologetic. Honest. Fresh out of the garage. Memorial Union Rathskeller Rain Location 9:00:00 PM - 11:59:00 PM Information: Courtney Byelich byelich@wisc.edu 608-262-7593

Saturday, Jun. 8 - WUD Music Presents: Bailiff

Bailiff's Red Balloon has been a long time coming. It was back in 2008 that the Chicago band released their introductory EP Mm Hmm, a four-track set of slow-burning indie rock with a raw, bluesy edge that, combined with their tight live shows, succeeded in getting plenty of people interested. After such a long gap from EP to full-length any band would have to deliver something extra special to make the wait pay off, and Bailiff don't disappoint on Red Balloon. Having spent most of 2010 working with engineer Beau Sorenson (Sparkle Horse, Death Cab for Cutie) and producer Jon Alvin (Wax on Radio, Dr Manhattan), the band didn't just create an extended version of Mm Hmm; the bluesy burn is still there, but the basic sound has been built upon and fleshed out into something that's even better. Anyone who got on the Bailiff train early on will likely find themselves wanting to champion the band even more after hearing this LP, and anyone who has yet to check them out shouldn't waste any time diving in.
Friday, Jun. 14 - WUD Music Presents: 3 Pill Morning

3 Pill Morning isn't just another rock band, and they'll leave you with anything but a musical hangover.
Forged in the hard rock proving grounds of Minneapolis, MN in late 2004, 3 Pill Morning could be described as trial by fire. Simply put, music was never a question for lead vocalist Jeff Stebbins, and failure was never an option. While other musicians were moving from project to project, and band to band, Stebbins took a different path, consistently growing and evolving 3 Pill Morning from an angst ridden rap-rap-core act, into an anthemic rock band no one can deny.
It took the better part of 5 years, over 500 shows, and a hand full of member changes to finally click. Nothing would stop the evolution of 3 Pill Morning. Early on, Stebbins found a natural chemistry with guitarist Ryan Walch and he quickly became a key member of the band's core. As the pieces fell into place, the final line up came into focus with the addition of bassist Charlie McCoy and drummer Trent Laugerman. The band forged on, hitting the road, solidifying their sound, and cementing their spot as a national touring act sharing the stage with the likes of Sevendust, Framing Hanley and NonPoint. Through 3 Pill Morning's consistent mile grinding and road warrior focus, the band has built an inspiring fan base with die hard supporters nationwide.
In 2012 the band signed a recording contract with King's Page 2 Music and New York based A2Z Entertainment. Two months and weeks of all night recording sessions later, the band emerged from the studio with a a renewed vigor and a slick concoction of fist pumping riffs, infectious melodies, and an energy that can only be described as relentless. 3 Pill Morning's label debut Black Tie Love Affair pegs all the dials and pulls no punches. The band's lead single "Rain" immediately raced into the top 100 Active Rock songs and their sleek video capturing the underdog story "Skin" has lit up youtube viewers world wide. All signs are positive that this band's determination and fan-centric demeanor will keep them on the radar for years to come.

2012 marks their 17th anniversary of keeping the positive messages of their unique indigenous Wisconsin reggae beats throbbing through the heartland. Their messages of peace, love, community, & spreading positive vibrations have been ringing out since Natty's inception.

Natty has backed up reggae legends Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Chaka Demus & Pliers, and shared the stage with Ziggy, Damian, & Stephen Marley, Sister Carol, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Wailing Souls, Culture with Joseph Hill, Beenie Man, & countless others.

JAH Boogie and his backing band's tight but fluid, rootsy but funky, beautiful but gritty, righteous but real vibration is clear to anyone listening to their music, either at a show or on their stereo.

It's almost impossible not to dance at a Natty live performance. Every Natty Nation concert is a different experience. Their energy is infections & their dubtastic jams are complex, yet their message is simple--spread the positive vibration.
USA | 106 min | PG-13 | HD Projection | Dir. Tim Burton

The Martians decide to attack Earth and devastate everything. Why? Because it's fun! Burton directs this immensely enjoyable spoof of 1950's sci-fi B movies, in which the hapless citizens of Earth face imminent doom from ray gun-toting little green aliens, with an anarchic sense of mischief. With the President and his First Lady installed in the White House and General Decker agitating for a nuke 'em approach to the aliens' invasion, humanity's chances are iffy at best (acmi).

Now, all of six months later, Mac is back with his first proper full length, Mac DeMarco 2. As opposed to RNRNC, '2' is a concerted effort to produce a cohesive work that showcases Mac's natural ability as a songwriter, singer and producer.

Bassel & The Supernaturals officially released "Dreamer" at The Empty Bottle in Chicago on February 28, 2013. Proceeds from their vinyl release were donated to a humanitarian effort in Syria during an intense civil war that has drastically affected Bassel's family abroad along with millions of others.

Bassel Almadani is a Syrian-American born/raised in Northeast Ohio, currently residing in Chicago, IL. Despite facing intense challenges in recent years (including a massive apartment complex fire and car theft), he has been frequently recording and touring the nation since 2008.

"Dreamer" was engineered at Hinge Studios in Chicago, IL during the summer of 2012. The album was an independent effort by Bassel & The Supernaturals, and the funds generated from their presale campaign helped to support their recording experience, a 3-week US tour, and a charity donation to Syria.

Bassel released "Submerged" as a solo effort in 2010 at Used Kids Records in Columbus, Ohio. Shortly after the conclusion of a four-week tour supporting his first LP, he was invited to perform at the Pelotonia opening ceremony with The Counting Crows and Augustana.

Bassel's self-titled EP was released in 2008, featuring the production talents of Sinkane (Ahmed Gallab), who has actively performed in groups such as Yeasayer, Caribou, Of Montreal, and Born Ruffians.
Thursday, Jul. 11 - WUD Music Presents: Oberhofer

Between 4 green towers composite of the best known human words for "strength" there was luxury to befit the king of octopuses, broad limestone podiums upholstered with kelp. Currents tackled the furniture west and replenished it relentlessly. In this way there was motion without change, and for the king of octopuses only the stimulant tickles of shaking kelp to measure the passage of time. He wound his tentacles into a spiral and languidly unfurled them again to expose the blood of baby seals to the current. Before him a planar formation of his children imitated the motion in vertical array, some tangling each other into rounds of dosey-do by the interspersal of their sticky pads.

A sonar from the port had goaded the octopuses into war against the seals who lived above them. This band and its music exist in rebuke of war between smooth creatures. Memorial Union Terrace 9:30:00 PM - 11:59:00 PM Information: Courtney Byelich music@union.wisc.edu 608-262-7593

Saturday, Jul. 13 - WUD Music Presents: Trapper Schoepp & The Shades

Trapper Schoepp has the ear of a troubadour, the eye of a journalist and the heart of a young poet. He began writing songs at a tender age with startling facility, distilling rock, folk and country traditions into tunes that are at turns spirited and melancholy. Themes ranging from pride of place, love and adventure shine with surprisingly sophisticated metaphors for a songwriter so young. Run, Engine, Run won't be out of place filed next to other artists distinguished for their early talent like Justin Townes Earle, Ha Ha Tonka and Lucero. Trapper, his brother Tanner, and the rest of their band the Shades offer this album as a love letter to their beloved home state of Wisconsin, and SideOneDummy will release it internationally on September 25, 2012.
Trapper Schoepp & The Shades is comprised of Trapper on lead vocals and guitar, brother Tanner on bass and vocals, drummer Jon Phillip (Tommy Stinson, Limbeck), and lead guitarist Graham Hunt. Daniel McMahon (Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, Cameron McGill) produced Run, Engine, Run and contributed keyboard during the sessions. Grammy-award winning engineer Geoff Sanoff (Fountains Of Wayne, Green Day, Nada Surf) mixed the album.
While it's difficult to capture the band's live charisma on record, Run, Engine, Run comes close with 12 well-crafted tunes that describe the everyday triumphs and tragedies of Midwestern life. As soon as the album hits the streets, The Shades will take to the road, bringing their heartland rock to the masses. "There's a blues song by the Rolling Stones called 'No Expectations' that hits on a person moving forward and not looking back," Trapper says. "I hear the song as the story of a young, lonely rambler or musician who's lost wealth and love, but accepts the fact that there's a whole world ahead of him. I'm young, so I look at this as an opportunity to press on and share songs. Right now I have no expectations other than to keep on keepin' on." What sweaty-browed video game aficionado hasn't pretended, while feverishly pounding away on their Playstation control, that they were actually saving the universe? An interstellar messenger visits Alex Rogan, a mild-mannered and anxious trailer-park resident, with a curious message: the game Alex has been dominating is much more than a simple plaything. A planet desperately in need of savvy star pilots has planted these games on Earth in an effort to find new recruits and it is up to Alex to save our sector of the universe (Alamo Drafthouse Cinema).

Thursday, Jul. 18 - WUD Music Presents: Bluegrass Series - Daylight in the Swamp

Daylight in the Swamp is a contemporary bluegrass band based out of Madison. The band members are a collection of some of the top musicians in the area. With a broad spectrum of material, they can bang out traditional versions of the classics, but at the same time, aren't afraid to incorporate songs from other genres. Their repertoire ranges from classics such as Blue Ridge Cabin Home, Big Spike Hammer, and Little Georgia Rose to Bob Seger's Turn the Page, David Allen Coe's Ride Me Down Easy, and Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain. Their airtight harmonies, razor sharp arrangements, and on-stage rapport make them audience favorites across Wisconsin and Illinois. The band's mission is to preserve the hard-driving traditional bluegrass sound, while including some material from other musical styles. Their work can best be described as "Music with a Bluegrass Accent." Memorial Union Rathskeller Rain Location 5:00:00 PM - 7:00:00 PM Information: Courtney Byelich byelich@wisc.edu 608-262-7593

Friday, Jul. 19 - WUD Music Presents: Behind the Beat - El Clan Destino

El Clan Destino is a unique Afro-Cuban band from Madison, Wisconsin. Its members boast training and experience across a wide variety of musical genres, but their common bond is a love of contemporary Cuban popular, folkloric, and jazz music. Wisconsin would seem an unlikely place for this type of band to emerge, but the groundwork had already been laid by earlier very popular area latin jazz and salsa groups that enjoyed tremendous success in the latin music boom of the '90's.
The ten piece salsa ensemble Madisalsa is where Vincent Fuh and Nickolas Moran honed their skills at tumbao, the characteristic patterns that all latin pianists and bassists need to know. Jamie Ryan, a master of Cuban hand percussion, had worked with Tony Casteneda's Latin Jazz Sextet. Fuh, Moran, and Ryan are all top flight jazz artists as well, performing frequently in area jazz clubs and annual festivals. Francisco Martinez, the newest Madison resident, came from Tampa Bay, Florida, where he received accolades playing exceptionally dynamic drums in Gumbi Ortiz's Latino Projeckt. Shortly after Martinez arrived in Madison, they knew they had potential to create something very special.

Iolanthe, or "The Peer and the Peri", opened at the Savoy Theatre on November 25, 1882, three nights after the final performance of Patience at the same theatre, and ran for 398 performances.

Gilbert had taken pot shots at the aristocracy before, but in this "fairy opera," the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective, privileged and dim-witted. The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire. Yet, both author and composer managed to couch the criticism among such bouncy, amiable absurdities that it is all received as good fun.

Friday, Jul. 19 - WUD Music Presents: Sidewalk Chalk

There are many lessons that come from age and experience. When one discovers such a thing, there's an inherent need to broadcast it to the world. This is that. With an eclectic variety of ages and experiences, Chicago based musicians Sidewalk Chalk are a force to be reckoned with.
This emcee, singer, trio of keys, bass, and drums, horn section of trumpet and trombone, and tap-dancer are the evolution of Hip-Hop, Soul and Jazz superbly packaged into sounds that you've quite possibly never heard before. The legend Sam Cooke once sang, "Change is Gonna Come." Musically, change is already here. Upon the heels of the release of their debut full-length album, "Corner Store" (released 3/6/12 and co-produced with Greg Magers of Lupe Fiasco's The Cool), Sidewalk Chalk has already proven themselves worthy of a listen. They're sure to satisfy the cravings of anyone in love with music and hungry for something different.
Musicality, honesty, and intellect are becoming harder to find. Thankfully, Sidewalk Chalk's goal is to be heard by the world and inspire its inhabitants. Quickly on their way to becoming one of the most talented live bands of this generation, Sidewalk Chalk was named "Best Hip-Hop Act in Chicago of 2010" by the Chicago Reader. The group's Emcee, Rico Sisney, represented Chicago at the 2012 World Expo in Shanghai, China. They've been featured on CBS News Online, 2dopeboyz, and Guest of a Guest Los Angeles. On top of that, Sidewalk Chalk has shared the stage with De La Soul, Company of Thieves, J*Davey, ?uestlove of The Roots, and Action Bronson. Individually, members of the group have acted as musical director(s) for Brother Ali, toured with Jazzanova and played behind Buddy Guy and Talib Kweli.
So, wake up world and meet the rest of us at the "Corner Store." We'll be out front with Sidewalk Chalk Memorial Union Rathskeller Rain Location 9:00:00 PM - 11:59:00 PM Information: Courtney Byelich byelich@wisc.edu 608-262-7593

Roy Neary is an electrical lineman who, while out on emergency repairs, witnesses an unidentified flying object. Neary's wife and children are at first skeptical, then concerned, and eventually fearful, as Roy refuses to accept a "logical" explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his job, his home, and his family to pursue the "truth" about UFOs. Neary's obsession eventually puts him in contact with others who've had close encounters with alien spacecraft, including a single mother whose son disappeared during her UFO experience, and a French researcher who believes that we can use a musical language to communicate with alien visitors. His theory is put to the test when a band of government researchers and underground UFO enthusiasts join for an exchange with alien visitors near Devil's Tower, Wyoming (Starz Denver Film Festival).

<a

Pushmi-Pullyu is a local Madison band that began their performance career, like every great band does, in a basement at the corner of Mills and Milton. They have come a long way since that first show in October 2008. After spending ten months in Norway, the band revolutionized their direction, "heavy-hitting rock songs with sax solos," not your typical basement sound. They are planning on releasing their untitled debut album sometime just prior to their performance on the Terrace.

Icarus Himself was started by Nick Whetro in 2008 as a solo project and has developed into a trio to include drummer Brad Kolberg and multi-instrumentalist Karl Christenson. Icarus Himself's sophomore full-length Career Culture is a sonic cinema in electro-psych-folk, drenched in the influences of artists like Kurt Vile, Deerhunter, The Who, and David Bowie. Career Culture is the third in a series of auto-biographical recordings, beginning with Coffins, released by Science of Sound in May of 2009, followed by the EP Mexico, released almost exactly one year later.
Boo Bradley is a hot blues stompin', jelly roll jumpin', rag jazz infusin', acoustic jug attack from Madtown, Wisconsin. Boo Bradley throws down a porch stomp boogie chock full of old time Delta moans from the likes of Son House and Charley Patton, the Piedmont shake of Blind Boy Fuller and the earliest Chicago Ragtime mastery of cats like Blind Blake and Big Bill Broonzy. None of these names sound familiar? Well, never you mind. Once you get a wiff of what these fellas are cookin', your feet'll know what to do, 'cause when Boo puts their groove stamp on a tune you can't call it nothin' but good ol' ho-maid jelly.
Thursday, Jul. 25 - The Madison Savoyards Presents Iolanthe - The 51st annual summer production!

Both Gilbert and Sullivan were at the height of their creative powers in 1882, and many people feel that Iolanthe, their seventh work together, is the most perfect of their collaborations. Music Hall 7:30:00 PM - 11:59:00 PM Information: Campus Arts Ticketing cain8259@att.net 608-265-2787

The music is inspired by Eastern European, Turkish and Balkan traditions, and is mostly instrumental.Joined by an ever expanding and contracting line-up of musicians, A Hawk and A Hacksaw seeks to create an ecstatic sound much like the village bands of old- virtuosity is appreciated but not over-emphasized- and it is the communal aspect of folk tradition and musicianship that becomes important. They were chosen by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he curated in March 2012 in Minehead, England. They performed a new and original soundtrack to Sergei Parajanov's 1964 classic; "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" Memorial Union Rathskeller Rain Location 9:00:00 PM - 11:59:00 PM Information: Courtney Byelich byelich@wisc.edu 608-262-7593

The stars of the classic series, Galaxy Quest, are still in costume, making appearances at science fiction conventions for their legions of diehard fans. But some of those fans are a little more far out than the actors could ever have imagined. A group of aliens who have mistaken intercepted television transmissions for "historical documents" arrive at a convention and whisk "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" and his crew into space to help them in their all-too-real war against a deadly adversary. With no script, no director, and no clue about real interstellar travel, these stars must turn in the performances of their lives to become the heroes the aliens believe them to be (MIT Lecture Series).

Friday, Aug. 9 - WUD Music Presents: Maxmillion Dunbar

These are bountiful times for fans of outer-limits dance music, so it's saying something that Maxmillion Dunbar has recorded one of the headiest albums you're likely to hear this year, on or off the dance floor. House of Woo, recently released on New York's RVNG label, derives its machine pulse from old-school house, but any further similarity with the current explosion of retro-obsessed, identikit club music ends there.

Where other producers use watery, plinking chords as signifiers of "deep," Dunbar creates a far more convincing illusion of depth, drawing you into a sound world of untold dimensions and whipping tangled phrases around your head until you're not sure which way is up. Drum machines play fast and loose with the rhythm, threatening to topple it all to the ground with every bashed-out snare fill and stumbling kick drum. Miraculously, though, it never does come crashing down. That might have something to do with the unusually buoyant nature of the album's sonics, held aloft as they are by soaring horn leads and glassy synthesizers and plastic birdsong. It's an incredibly tactile sound, like something you could hold in your hand - a fistful of marbles and gravel and gummi worms.

Dunbar (real name: Andrew Field-Pickering), based in D.C., is one of the musicians behind the Future Times label, which alongside imprints like L.I.E.S. and WT Records is at the heart of a current renaissance in American underground dance music. It's a scene that draws heavily from vintage house, the lo-fi contrarianism of Dutch electro, and punk rock's can-do spirit. Where Dunbar differs from his gritty peers is in the peculiar sense of bliss that he conjures. As gnarly as it can get, House of Woo is ultimately all about easygoing vibes - vibes gleaned from classic hip-hop and the esoteric cuts buried on jazz-fusion B-sides. When he spoke with us by phone, Field-Pickering explained that recording House of Woo "was like making my own versions of those records I have with one crazy jam on them. I tried to make 11 of those." Memorial Union Rathskeller Rain Location 9:00:00 PM - 11:59:00 PM Information: Courtney Byelich byelich@wisc.edu 608-262-7593

Who are the LORDS OF THE TRIDENT? Hahaha...FOOL! You are not worthy to gaze upon their might!
Their metal's so pure that only diamonds can scratch it, and usually the diamonds are the ones that end up getting hurt in the end. Their amps are so loud, Manowar knocked on their door and asked them to "please turn down". Don't let your girlfriends near LORDS OF THE TRIDENT, 'cause their music is guaranteed to make panties explode. You think you're bad? While you're watching their sweep picking wondering how they bend space-time to fit all the notes in, they'll punch you right in the face without missing a beat.
ALL HAIL THE LORDS!

Thunderunderus was formed in Chicago in 2007. Paying homage to the great rock groups of the past and blending it into their own tongue-in-cheek style of Rock N Roll.

Something is amiss in the sleepy California hamlet of Santa Mira. Initially, Dr. Miles Bennell dismisses reports from citizens accusing friends and family of not actually being who they claim to be. But the doctor soon makes a startling discovery. Extraterrestrials capable of replicating humans and assuming their identities have invaded Santa Mira, replacing its citizens with emotionless alien duplicates. It's up to Bennell to sound the alarm and almost single-handedly battle the alien forces (Muller Family Theatres).

Friday, Aug. 23 - WUD Music Presents Behind the Beat: Tritonics

he Tritonics are Jeff Stehr, Dave Bolyard, Tom Plutshack, Karl Landwehr and Dave Cusma. They write, arrange and perform original music written in the Jamaican roots styles of rock steady, ska and reggae. They also cover crucial standards of those genres by artists like Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, Toots and the Maytalls, The Heptones, Johnny Clarke, The Valentines and The Jamaicans. In addition, The Tritonics apply a unique process they've dubbed "doowopification" to rock n roll classics by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and many others. Doowopification reinterprets and revitalizes (Ital-izes!) classic rock standards, anointing them in the name of Jah with stripped down, Jamaican roots-style arrangements, one drop-centered rhythm and harmony-heavy vocals.

Saturday, Aug. 24 - WUD Music Presents: The Hoyle Brothers

The Hoyle Brothers approach their music the way a preacher might prepare for a sermon: Reference the good Book, find a theme that resonates and deliver it with fire and passion.

That's what makes The Hoyle Brothers so special. Their brand of genuine country music draws from the genre's deepest traditions' lyrics that speak universal truths, melody lines that melt your heart and two-step rhythms that make your boots scoot.

Since the start of weekly residencies at Chicago's The Hideout and The Empty Bottle in 2002, The Hoyle Brothers have earned respect and recognition from a growing number of fans and music critics who find the boys' purity of purpose and first-rate musicianship irresistible. Some go a step further, predicting The Hoyle Brothers will eventually show Nashville that its current roster of pop-minded, new country stars needs a little of The Hoyle Brothers' battered boot leather and real country soul.

For their part, The Hoyle Brothers invite you to see what the buzz is all about for yourself. Check out their touring schedule, sample some of their fine real country music and don't forget to pass along a "hi-dee-ya-ho" when you see the boys live.
