enjoying the terrace on a nice summer dayUW President Charles Van Hise calls for the construction of a Union building to provide for the communal life of instructors and students in work, in play, and in social relations during his inaugural address in 1904. As a response to this challenge and emulating what Oxford created, the student members of the Iron Cross Society organized the Wisocnsin Men's Union in 1907.

The first floor of the old YMCA building was home to the Union for several years during which time, the Wisconsin Union established its role on campus as the program board. Later, Regent President Walter Kohler, Sr. chaired the Memorial Union Building committee to initiatie plans and secure funding for the building. Meanwhile, Professor Ned Gardner and Jack Dollard paved the way through a capital campaign for alumni, faculty, and students to build a home for Wisconsin spirit. All donors are given a membership to the Wisconsin Union. Memorial Union was erected and opened its doors in 1928. Later, Union South opened its doors in 1971 to further meet the demand for programs, services and facilities.

The Wisconsin Union receives no tax dollars; it is wholly supported by self-generated revenue, grants, gifts, and support from the Memorial Union Building Association (MUBA). As a Union lmember, your support for the Wisconsin Union to support and grow its beloved facilities and programs.

Support is especially important, today because the Wisconsin Union is in the midst of designing and building a new south campus union to replace existing Union South.
