Date: 5/26/2012 at 9:00 pm
Cost: Free!
Location: Memorial Union - Rathskeller Rain Location. The Trinidad Tripoli Steel Drum Band's story begins before most of us (and many of our parents) were alive. Trinidad's Hugh Borde spearheaded Trinidad's steel drum band movement in Post-World War II Trinidad. Borde, his family, and his band made their way to the U.S. in the 70s and took it by storm; The Trinidad Tripoli Steel Drum Band appeared on various variety shows and recorded an album with Liberace in 1972 that would go on to win a Grammy. Forty years later Borde's band is still going strong and playing sunny steel drum music that will keep a weekend of dancing going. Make sure to catch these legends when they make their stop on the isthmus.

Date: 6/8/2012 at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Location: Memorial Union - Rathskeller Rain Location.Boo Bradley is a hot blues stompin', jelly roll jumpin', rag jazz infusin', one-man acoustic jug attack from Madtown, Wisconsin. That man throws down a porch stomp boogie chock full of old time Delta moans from the likes of Son House and Charley Patton, the Piedmont shake of Blind Boy Fuller and the earliest Chicago Ragtime mastery of cats like Blind Blake and Big Bill Broonzy. None of these names sound familiar? Well, never you mind. Once you get a wiff of what this fella's cookin', your feet'll know what to do, cause when Boo his puts his groove stamp on a tune you can't call it nothin' but good ol' ho-maid jelly.

Memorial Union Music WUD Music Presents: The People's Temple w/ Psychic Twin, Pale Girls
Date: 6/21/2012 at 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm
Cost: Free
Location: Memorial Union - Terrace. This Lansing, Michigan gang of renegade upstarts has been extremely prolific over the last couple of years, and as the time quickly passes by, even better songs have evolved, as this debut LP will undoubtedly prove. Formed from two sets of brothers, The People's Temple have a certain cohesion that's hard to pin down, yet impossible to resist.
Taking the listener even further down the darkened path, they straddle the line between simple garage intentions and certain lysergic after effects, causing these songs to take on a 13th Floor Elevators/Troggs/Black Diamonds vibe that's basically supposed to be impossible to pull off without sounding corny. The dirgey yet sparkling production that rears its head on their debut album here may seem like quite a leap forward (a la the Smith Westerns on their debut LP) to listeners already hooked on their string of 7' singles, but the songwriting shines through remarkably well, and quickly separates them from the pack. With hazy nods to both shoegaze and 60s pop/psych interspersed with their own signature sound, they burst through the thickening fog with anthemic precision and unshakable irresistibly, as each track revs up and blasts off through the stratosphere, sending waves of chills and reverberation in every direction. It's always exciting when a band creates such a breakthough like this, and we're beyond ecstatic to help it take off and rip through the sky.

WUD Music Presents: Sidewalk Chalk with K. Raydio
Date: 8/4/2012 at 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm
Cost: Free
Location: Memorial Union - Terrace. This emcee, singer, trio of keys, bass, and drums, horn section of trumpet and trombone, and tap-dancer are the evolution of Hip-Hop, Soul and Jazz superbly packaged into sounds that you've quite possibly never heard before. Upon the heels of the release of their debut full-length album, 'Corner Store' (released 3/6/12 and co-produced with Greg Magers of Lupe Fiasco's The Cool), Sidewalk Chalk has already proven themselves worthy of a listen. Sidewalk Chalk was named "Best Hip-Hop Act in Chicago of 2010" by the Chicago Reader. The group's Emcee, Rico Sisney, represented Chicago at the 2012 World Expo in Shanghai, China. They've been featured on CBS News Online, 2dopeboyz, and Guest of a Guest Los Angeles. On top of that, Sidewalk Chalk has shared the stage with artists such as J*Davey, Company of Thieves, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and ?uestlove of The Roots. Individually, members of the group have acted as musical director(s) for Brother Ali, toured with Jazzanova and played behind Buddy Guy and Talib Kweli.
K.Raydio released her debut album, the Significant (Other) EP on August 30, 2010. Produced entirely by DJ, producer and multimedia artist Man Mantis, the EP includes heavy hip-hop, soul and blues influences, particularly on the opening track 'Make It Happen' (featuring Minneapolis' own Phonetic ONE) and fan favorite 'Catchy Hook' (featuring JDante). The album's closing track, 'My Outro' is a dedication to Lena Horne and has evolved into K.Raydio's signature song. Following an ecstatic reaction and favorable Internet buzz, K.Raydio extended the project and released the Significant (Other) EP - Part II, as an exclusively free online release on March 3, 2011. Collaborating once again with Man Mantis, Part II incorporates more jazz, R&B and experimental elements than its predecessor. The tracks include J Dilla-esque 'It's Alright', soulful duet 'Prayin' (produced by and featuring Charlie Kim) and 'Protocol', which The Onion's A.V. Club - Madison called a "stellar, new break-up song" (3/29/11). As a result of her stellar releases and entertaining live show, she's shared the stage with hip-hop elite like Big Quarters, Dumate, Cecil Otter of Doomtree, F. Stokes, Maria Isa, and Prof.WUD Film Presents: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Artist InfoWUD Music Presents: The Hoyle Brothers with Ghost Town Council
Date: 8/11/2012 at 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm
Cost: Free
Location: Memorial Union - Terrace. The Hoyle Brothers approach their music the way a preacher might prepare for a sermon: Reference the good Book, find a theme that resonates and deliver it with fire and passion.
That's what makes The Hoyle Brothers so special. Their brand of genuine country music draws from the genre's deepest traditions: lyrics that speak universal truths, melody lines that melt your heart and two-step rhythms that make your boots scoot.
Since the start of weekly residencies at Chicago's The Hideout and The Empty Bottle in 2002, The Hoyle Brothers have earned respect and recognition from a growing number of fans and music critics who find the boys' purity of purpose and first-rate musicianship irresistible. Some go a step further, predicting The Hoyle Brothers will eventually show Nashville that its current roster of pop-minded, new country stars needs a little of The Hoyle Brothers battered boot leather and real country soul.
For their part, The Hoyle Brothers invite you to see what the buzz is all about for yourself. Check out their touring schedule, sample some of their fine real country music and don't forget to pass along a "hi-dee-ya-ho" when you see the boys live.
Ghost Town Council was a musical foundation born in the aftermath of the Superior Elevator Fire of 1907. The beast slumbered for 99 years then awoke peacefully -- yet eager to join the burgeoning Madison Cosmic Country music scene. It was but a dream on the minds of the young praying for some measure of musical respite. All told, the times have changed. So does GTC. Loud guitars give way to soft ones, three part harmonies have grown to four part harmonies, and The Special Forces take down America's Most Wanted Man. Empty bottles don't leak.
Ghost Town Council consists of Brian Knapp on guitar, Mason Aumanstal on guitar, Lisa Case on Fiddle, and Ben Wolf on the analog-acoustic drum machine. Sonically and dynamically speaking, GTC can rumble like a freight train, or amble by like tumbleweed at a four-way stop. The Ghost Town Council Special makes stops between Woody Guthrie and Wilco -- Pete Seeger and Old Crow Medicine Show -- Roy Orbison and The Felice Brothers and all ghost towns on the main line run. We Hear them All! If you enjoy the spirits and bow to the altar of Americana, make a special trip to the shows tab and join us for what is sure to be a good live show.
