Wednesday, Dec 02,  8:00 PM
Memorial Union - Fredric March Play Circle
FREE!
The Understudies Improv Troupe mainly focuses on short-form improv, which includes individual scenes and games lasting no longer than a few minutes. This type is so successful because it tends to lay out the comedic elements of a situation almost immediately. It really brings out the personality of each group member, while allowing the audience to join in on the fun also!

December 3 | USA, 2007 | 84 min | Jennifer Venditti | DVD | Unrated
Jennifer Venditti's debut film is a provocative coming-of-age story, an odyssey into the soul of an American teenager. Following Billy as he bicycles through the quiet streets of small town Maine, we watch him traverse the frustrating gap between imagination and reality, grappling with isolation and first-time young love. By turns exhilarating and disturbing, we see the world from the intimate view of an expressive and seemingly fearless outsider.

USA, 2009 | 112 min | Neill Blomkamp | 35mm | R

In 1990, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed "The Prawns," appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new 'Prawn' friends. (adaped from imdb)

South Africa, 2005 | 94 min | Gavin Hood | DVD | R

In Johannesburg, the small time criminal Tsotsi is a teenager without feelings, hardened by his tough life. After killing a man with his gang in a robbery; hitting the gangster Boston of his gang; humiliating a crippled beggar along one night, Tsotsi hijacks a car and under the despair of a woman, he shoots her in the stomach. While driving the car, Tsotsi finds that there is a baby on the back seat and the woman was a desperate mother. He brings the baby to his house in the slum and becomes attached to him. For six days, the baby changes his behavior, arousing and developing the sense of empathy and humanity in the cold blood killer.

A live multimedia performance & workshop by: I Love Presets
Tuesday, Dec 08,  8:00 PM
Memorial Union - Play Circle

I Love Presets is a Chicago-based experimental sound and new media project, composed of artists Jon Satrom and Jason Soliday. They manipulate found sounds and animated GIFs on home-brewed equipment in spectacular real-time audiovisual performances. Through datamoshing, glitch processing, and even downloading viruses, I <3 Presets act out a deconstruction of the digital interface. Settings normally accepted as fixed and stable are hijacked, and anything electronic is fair game for their exploitation, from Excel spreadsheets to video games and drum machines. This special event will feature an I <3 Presets performance of several new pieces and an interactive data-bending workshop in which the artists will demo their unique hacking techniques and art-making processes.
