About the WUD Music Committee
We are the Wisconsin Union Directorate Music Committee. We book, promote and cover shows every weekend at Memorial Union's Der Rathskeller and Terrace and at Union South's The Sett.
Free Music
We program exclusively for three venues:
Der Rathskeller is a place of conviviality with a German Beer Hall feel, where artists from WHY? to Great Lake Swimmers to Diplo play in the quintessential college environment.
The Terrace is one of the country's only lakeside venues that offers entirely free concerts and has hosted a wide variety of bands like Vampire Weekend, the Buzzcocks, Fleet Foxes, Yo La Tengo, Seu Jorge, Chairlift, Kidz in the Hall, Janelle Monae, and many others!
The Sett, our newest music venue, is located on the first floor of Union South. The Sett has been home to acts such as Kveayshawn and Neon Indian.
Additionally, we program a variety of series, cosponsored shows, and paid programs:
Friday After Class:
A series that take place Friday afternoons at Memorial Union, during Terrace season (May-September). The series is comprised of "easy on the ears" music. Think jazz, easy listening, singer-songwriters, etc. We are also hosts to the Union’s Open Mic, as well as bringing comedy and other exciting events to the union. For questions about FAC or other series and special events, contact Dan Pries at pries@wisc.edu.
Grants/Cosponsorship:
We can help you with event planning and finding a band/musical act for you event, as well as help you obtain financial support for your event. If you are an independent promoter or campus student organization looking to collaborate with the music committee please contact Caroline Wilson at cewilson2@wisc.edu.
Large Events:
We sometimes feature paid programs that extend beyond the scope of our free weekend music programming. Paid events happen in venues such as the Wisconsin Union Theater, the Great Hall in Memorial Union and Club 770 in Union South, and other local venues. Recent Paid Programs include Girl Talk, Broken Social Scene, Ying Yang Twins, Cursive, Mason Jennings, Steve Aoki, and Minus the Bear. With questions about paid programming and other large events, contact Molly Lloyd at mlloyd@wisc.edu.
Promotions:
We Support Art. As the music industry changes we are looking for new ways to promote and reach new, broader audiences. This year brought a new WUD Music Twitter, YouTube channel, Facebook fanpage, blog and events e-mail list, as well as revision and extension of traditional promotion methods such as flyering, print advertisements, ticket giveaways, silk-screen posters, etc. If you like getting out there and beating the pavement by posting fliers all over town or want to try your hand at designing posters/fliers for our shows contact Danielle Wolf at dswolf2@wisc.edu.
